Love Lose Live: Divorce is a Rollercoaster

Love Lose Live: Divorce is a Rollercoaster is a novel by Mary Banham-Hall, family lawyer and mediator.

Beth and Simon Bailey are the couple at the centre of this fast-paced and ultimately life-affirming narrative. Beth thought she and her husband were working through problems in their marriage. Simon, however, was wondering whether they even had a future together. When Simon starts an affair with the alluring Harriet, suddenly there’s no way back. Beth and Simon’s three young children are caught up in their parents’ fighting at every turn …

My Thoughts

Divorce isn’t something I have been through myself, but it is something I have been affected by, as I am a child of divorced parents. Love Lose Live is an insight into how divorce affects families and how mediation can work when going through a divorce.

I really like how Mary doesn’t just focus on the parents, but also the thoughts of the children and how they often feel pushed and pulled between them, caught in the middle of a rather sticky situation and how they can sometimes feel that they are the blame for the breakdown in the parents’ marriage.

Mary narrates the story particularly well, being sure to not make it a book about who was in the right and who was in the wrong.

It’s a book showing how mediation can work when going through a divorce and not everything has to be done through the courts. However, Mary does offer an alternate ending and shows the reader what would have happened if Beth and Simon decided that mediation was not the route for them.

It is a rather bittersweet story, as we know when divorce happens, everyone involve always loses out on something and the drastic changes to a family dynamic takes it toll, not just to those directly affected but also to extended family members, friends and even work colleagues.

It really doesn’t matter if you have never experienced divorce, this book is a great read for all those in a relationship that involves children.
