Did you know there is Warship in the River Thames in London? Neither did we until we researched Battleships as J wanted to go visit a real life one.
We opted to go visit the HMS Belfast anchored in the River Thames near Queens Walk in London.
Situated in prime location for other London Tourist attractions, HMS Belfast is easy to get to with London Bridge and Tower Hill tube stations just 5 and 10 minutes walk away respectively.
Explore HMS Belfast’s nine decks to discover the stories of life on board this warship during the Second World War and beyond. Imagine sleeping in one of the tightly packed hammocks during duties in Arctic waters, or being stationed deep in the bowels of the ship when she opened fire in support of Allied troops on D-Day. Venture into the interactive Operations Room, and immerse yourself in the midst of a battle in our Gun Turret Experience.
We visited HMS Belfast out of season and the weather wasn’t great (snowing and raining), so you have to be careful not to slip in the decks.
Pushchairs are allowed on to the warship, although you are limited to just one deck. I found myself sitting in the indoor cafe watching a little documentary clip, having a nice warm drink with the 2 little ones whilst the older 2 explored the rest of the boat with their Dad.
Free audio guides are available for your tour of HMS Belfast and they’re great for providing an insight into the workings and history of the ship.
Hear battle stories from the Second World War and beyond – the convoys in icy arctic conditions, the bombardment of German defences on D-Day and the 404 days spent patrolling waters during the Korean War.
Audio guides are available in 4 languages, English, French, Spanish and German.
Entry on to HMS Belfast is FREE for Under 16’s. Adults are charged at £14.50 each with Concessions (Students, Seniors, Disabled) charged at £11.60 each. These prices are inclusive of a voluntary donation.
If you do not wish to pay the voluntary donation, then entry prices would be Adult £13.15, Concessions £10.55.
We would recommend visiting HMS Belfast if you plan on visiting London, especially if you enjoy learning about Warships, if your child is learning about them, or if you just want something different to do.
HMS Belfast is open daily from 1 March to 31 October 10am – 6pm with last admission being at 5pm.
